Rice production can be increased by improving the technical efficiency of farmers in the use of existing production resources. This study assesses the technical efficiency of rice farmers in Niger State, and examine the factors influencing their technical efficiency. The study used primary data obtained from a sample of 433 rice farmers from eight Local Government Areas in the study area. The data were analyzed using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and regression analysis. The data envelopment analysis results revealed that the majority of rice farmers are technically inefficient, indicating considerable potential for improving the use of existing production resources. The regression results showed that income, Access to credit, age, and farming experience were significant determinants of technical efficiency while other explanatory variables had either negative or statistically insignificant relationship with technical efficiency. The study, therefore, recommends improved government support, particularly in providing financial assistance to farmers to reduce constraint in accessing farm inputs such as seeds, fertilizer, tractor machine, and other production resources Also the capacity of agricultural extension workers should also be strengthened through training on improved rice production practices and modern farming technologies. Finally, special attention should be given to technical inefficient farmers through targeted training, increased access to credit and other productive resources to enhance technical efficiency in rice production
